Conversion rate can describe movement between any two stages. Close rate usually describes the share of qualified opportunities that become closed sales. A team can improve one while the other falls, so managers need stage-specific definitions.
Conversion rate
Completed next-stage actions ÷ eligible starting-stage records × 100
Examples include visitor to form submission, lead to consultation, consultation to qualified opportunity, and proposal to decision.
Close rate
Closed-won sales ÷ qualified opportunities × 100
Close rate should exclude records that never met the company's opportunity definition.
Why the distinction matters
A marketing campaign can increase lead conversion while producing lower-quality opportunities. A sales program can improve qualified close rate without increasing website conversion. Looking only at total leads or total sales hides where the change occurred.
Build a revenue funnel
Track:
- Organic visitor or campaign response.
- Lead or playbook request.
- Booked consultation.
- Completed consultation.
- Qualified opportunity.
- Proposal or program recommendation.
- Closed-won customer.
- Closed revenue and commission.
Record source, landing page, content ID, campaign, and first and last meaningful touch.
Measure quality and economics
Pair stage conversion with average order value, gross profit, discounts, sales-cycle length, cancellations, customer experience, attributable pipeline, revenue, and commission.
Apply the distinction to incentives
A discounted travel voucher campaign may affect appointment response, qualified close rate, or both. Define which stage is expected to change and record whether eligible customers actually saw the offer.
Manage the whole path to revenue
Review how to calculate sales close rate and sales promotion metrics.
Next step: Schedule a campaign consultation to define the funnel, attribution fields, campaign exposure, and revenue dashboard.

Conversion rate measures movement between any two stages. Close rate measures closed sales from qualified opportunities.
Track the complete funnel from visitor and lead through consultation, qualified opportunity, sale, revenue, and commission. Define each denominator and keep it consistent.
A discounted travel voucher may improve response, close rate, or both. Record who was eligible and who actually saw the offer.
Do not celebrate more leads if fewer become qualified opportunities. The goal is profitable closed revenue, and every stage should explain how it contributes.
